Forest Fungi is a company built around the skills, talents, and research objectives of our mycologist Luca Gagliano, who at 19 is deeply committed to finding new ways to provide nutritious mushrooms to at risk communities, to promoting the science of mushroom cultivation, and to his research objectives into mycelium/agricultural waste composite materials. Luca became fascinated by fungi and worked to buy his first autoclave in 10th grade to conduct his first nationally recognized research. He is currently a freshman with a focus on Environmental Science at Ohio University.
In 2022 Luca received an award for his mycelium composite research from the Ohio Academy of Science, and was selected to participate in the United States Virgin Islands Agricultural Summer internship program focused on alternative agriculture, received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Environmental Protection Research, the National Geographic That's Geography Cultivating Empathy for the Earth award, and was selected as a Regeneron International Science and Engineering Award finalist.
In addition to being an entrepreneur with his own successful mycology research lab, micro farm, and sales channels, in 2023 Luca was again honored to receive awards for his continuing mycelium composite research from the Ohio Academy of Science, the United States Agency for International Development Science Champion Award, the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award, and the Outstanding ASCENT Project Award.
In 2024 the Forest Fungi Micro Farm and Research Lab is growing fast, adding a new ultra clean laminar flow lab process room, fungal DNA tissue sampling and analysis lab equipment, and much more. Luca is pleased to be working again with our local high school in Athens, Ohio to do an educational program on mycology and mycelium composite materials with the kids, and has enjoyed developing the lesson plan in cooperation with master teachers who really care about their students, and science! There has been international interest in the high school mycology lesson plan, so Luca is looking forward to sharing notes for what works well after incorporating feedback from working with students and teachers. So far the reaction from everyone has been very positive as he gets the program going!
